Akron, OH is an affordable and attractive family-oriented city offering a great quality of life. If you like snow, you’ll love the winter months here, as Akron sees more snowfall than most cities. There are plenty of entertaining winter activities to enjoy in and around town. Here are a few of the most fun options.
Wild Lights at Akron Zoo
In the buildup to Christmas throughout December, enjoy one of the wildest light displays in the city. With over one million lights in a dazzling display spread throughout the zoo, you can really get into the Christmas spirit as you stroll between walls of synchronized, animated lighting and Christmas music.
You can also visit Mrs. C’s Sweets store for s’mores and other Christmas goodies. And all the while, the animals are there to add an extra touch of excitement to the festive event. Just don’t forget to bring your camera! You’ll find the zoo at 500 Edgewood Avenue.
Make Belief Midnight
New Year’s Eve celebrations are usually too late for our young ones. But why should our kids miss out on all the fun? With Make Belief Midnight, children can celebrate New Year’s Eve earlier on the final day of December at Akron’s Children’s Museum.
Starting in the morning, midday is treated as midnight, with colorful decorations and confetti, party hats, a midnight ball drop, and a proper New Year countdown. When the clock strikes twelve, there’s a huge balloon drop, celebratory music, and dancing. If that sounds like something you’re children will enjoy, you can find the museum at 216 S Main Street.
Outdoor Ice Skating
One benefit of having such chilly winters is Akron has some superb seasonal outdoor skating options that only open in winter. Around the city, you have both outdoor rinks and also areas of rivers and lakes that require over four inches of ice and a surface clean of snow to be safe to skate on. Visit Sand Run Metro Park for one such natural ice skating spot on a safe patch of water in the Big Bend Area.
You’ll find Sand Run Metro Park at 1300 Sand Run Road. Lock 3 Park at 200 South Main Street also has a sizable ice skating rink. Drive to the ice skating spot in your new 2023 Buick Encore GX Preferred. You needn’t fear the slippery winter roads with the Encore’s sophisticated anti-lock brake system and cruise control that keeps you at safe distances from the vehicle ahead.
As you’re driving around town this winter, visit Toth Buick GMC. We’re a local family-owned dealership that’s been looking after the region’s drivers for almost a hundred years: since 1925.
